We always want to make the holidays special. One way to add warmth and cheer to your home is to make unique Christmas tree decorations with your own hands. Today we will show you how to make a cute toy in the image of the Grinch, the famous character from the New Year’s fairy tale.
Materials you will need
To make the Grinch toy, we will need the following materials:
- Green, red, and white felt;
- Wire for the base (thin, flexible);
- Sintepon or holofiber (for filling the toy);
- Needles and thread (matching the color of the felt);
- Titan glue or hot glue;
- Scissors;
- Marker or pencil for fabric;
- Decorative elements: buttons, beads, ribbons;
- Small bell (optional).
Step 1. Create a template
Find or draw a template of the Grinch. It can be in the form of a head with a characteristic smile or a whole figure.
- Cut out the template from paper to use as a guide for cutting out the felt pieces.
- Tip: Start with a simple shape — the head and torso can be made as separate pieces, and the arms and legs can be flexible, wire-based.
Step 2. Cut out the details from the felt
- Green felt — the Grinch’s body, arms, legs, and head.
- Red felt — Santa Claus’ hat and clothing details.
- White felt — the hat trim and buttons.
- Cut out all the details using the template, leaving a margin of about 0.5 cm for seams or glue.
Step 3. Sew or glue the main parts together.
- If sewing: sew the front and back parts of the head and body together, leaving a small area for the filling.
- Fill with synthetic padding or holofiber and carefully sew up the remaining area.
- If using glue: glue the parts together, wait until the glue is completely dry, then glue in the filling.
- Tip: For movable arms and legs, you can insert thin wire inside so that the toy can be bent slightly.
Step 4. Make the Grinch’s face and expression
- Use a marker or thin brush to draw the eyes and smile.
- You can use beads or buttons for the eyes to add volume.
- For a more expressive smile, add red or pink felt for the lips.
- The characteristic sly smile is a key element of the toy.
Step 5. Add details
- Hat: red felt, edged with white. Glue it to the head.
- Decorations: you can sew buttons onto the clothes or add a miniature bell to the hat.
- You can also make a small scarf or mini sock for a gift.
Step 6. Create a loop for the tree
- Make a loop out of thin ribbon or thread and attach it to the top of the hat or head.
- Make sure the loop is securely fastened so that the toy does not fall off the branch.
Step 7. Final touches
- Check that all the details are securely attached.
- Add glitter if you want a more festive look.
- If necessary, carefully trim the edges of the felt.
