It’s not Christmas until we watch The Grinch. My kids have loved this holiday classic since they were babies. It could be in part because it’s a favorite of mine and I know all the words to the original animated version. That’s what makes this DIY Grinch ornament a perfect addition to our Christmas tree.
Gather Your Supplies
To make these Grinch ornaments, you only need a few things:
- Clear ornament (plastic or glass)
- Green pom poms (varying sizes)
- Paper plate
- Red paint
- Black paint pen
- Ribbon
You might also want to have an empty egg carton to sit your ornaments in while they dry.
Making Your Grinch Ornament
Start off by putting down some paper bags or newspaper where you’ll be making your Grinch ornaments. First you’ll need to take the top off your ornament and fill it with green pom poms. You’ll need clear ornaments. They can be glass or plastic. I prefer plastic because I know what would happen if I gave my kids the glass ones…
Once you’ve got it as full as you’d like, put the top back on your ornament to keep the insides in. Then wipe the outside of the ornament to make sure there aren’t any smudges or anything. Put a little bit of red paint onto a paper plate. Using a paint brush, put a bit of red paint on your kiddo’s thumb. Put the painted thumb onto the ornament. Repeat with the other thumb (or use the same one – whatever is easier for you!) to make a heart shape on the outside of the ornament.
Place your ornament into an empty egg carton, muffin tin or another safe place to let the paint dry. Overnight is best, but you can move on as soon as the paint is dry to the touch.
Using your black paint pen, draw a heart shape around the thumb prints. Add a piece of ribbon to hang your ornament on the tree.
Customize your Grinch Ornament
You can make your Grinch ornament even more special to you. Mix up how you outline your heart. Use dots or a dashed line or solid line. On the back of the ornament, you can add your child’s name and the year so you’ll remember exactly when those little thumb prints are from.
