Planning a Visit to Carowinds: The Basics
I’m a planner by nature so this part is almost as much fun as the actual vacation itself. And you don’t have to plan every minute of every day, but even knowing the basics can be helpful.
If planning isn’t your favorite thing, that’s ok! You can let your kids dive in and do some research for the trip too. They can figure out things that they’ve got to do during their time at Carowinds and help with the planning process.
And let’s be real – you’re not planning a week long Disney vacation here. You’re planning a few days at a fun amusement park and water park. SO much easier to plan!!
We visited Carowinds with a couple of other families and it was very easy to coordinate so we could plan our visit and stay connected during our time in the parks.
Carowinds Planning Tips
- Download the Carowinds Map App: Before you even pack your bags, make sure to download the Carowinds map app on your smartphone. It’s more than just a map – it’s where you’ll find real-time information on ride wait times, show schedules, and even the nearest dining options. Plus, it can help you locate restrooms, ATMs, and first aid stations with the tap of a finger, ensuring you spend less time searching and more time enjoying. (Important note: download the app before you leave home. There are NO paper maps in the parks so you have to have the map in the app to get around.)
- Buy Carowinds Tickets Online: To save time (and potentially your budget), purchase your Carowinds tickets online before your visit. Not only does this skip the hassle of long lines at the ticket window when you arrive, but you’ll also have the opportunity to take advantage of online exclusive deals and discounts. Keep an eye out for special promotions, season passes for frequent visitors (don’t skip over the season passes. Do the math to see if it’s a money saver for you depending on the length of your trip), and bundled packages that can include meals or Fast Lane passes, offering you more bang for your buck.
- Check Carowinds Hours and Events Calendar: Carowinds’ operating hours can vary by season, day of the week, and during special events. Before you plan your visit, check the park’s official website for the most up-to-date information on opening and closing times. This is also a great opportunity to explore the events calendar. Carowinds hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, from the summer splash of Carolina Harbor Water Park to the frightful fun of SCarowinds. Timing your visit around these events can add an extra layer of excitement to your trip.
Tips for Budgeting for Your Carowinds Trip
- Cost to Visit: Budgeting for your Carowinds adventure doesn’t have to be a headache. Start by listing potential expenses: tickets, food, parking, souvenirs, and any extras like Fast Lane passes. Consider meal plans offered by the park as a cost-effective way to feed the family without breaking the bank. Remember, outside food isn’t allowed in the park, but you can exit for a picnic in designated areas and re-enter.
- Accommodation Options: Deciding where to stay is a big part of your planning process. Staying at Carowinds offers the ultimate convenience, with easy access to the park and early entry benefits for hotel guests. However, if you’re working with a tighter budget, there are plenty of nearby hotels that offer comfort and value. Many partner with Carowinds to offer package deals that include park tickets, making them a great alternative. Research and book early to secure the best rates and availability.
Carowinds Planning Timeline
Even if you’re taking a last minute trip to the park, you can do some quick planning and budgeting to make your day run more smoothly. Here’s a timeline and checklist to help you plan your Carowinds trip effectively:

1 Week Before Your Visit
- Weather Check: Look at the forecast for your visit days and adjust your packing list accordingly. Consider packing ponchos for rain or extra layers if it’s expected to be cooler.

1-2 Days Before Your Visit

Height Requirements and Kid-Friendly Rides

Visiting Carowinds as a Plus Size Person
Being a plus-sized person, one of the first things I worry about is what I’ll be able to do when we go somewhere new, especially when I’m traveling with my kids. It’s not as much of a problem now that they’re getting older, but when they were too short to meet the height requirements, it was a big stressor for me.
I never wanted them to miss out on riding anything because of my size. I also want to be able to enjoy the rides and attractions too.
I was able to ride everything we wanted to throughout the park without issue. I did also see several other people asking members of the Caroiwnds team prior to getting in line (I feel like I need to point out that I only noticed because I was keeping an eye out – NOT because of the way the situation was handled at all) if there was a place to “test” the ride seating before waiting in line and boarding.
Some things were a tighter fit than other rides so if you’re worried at all, ask a member of the Carowinds team. In some cases, safety equipment was tight because I wasn’t sitting in the seat properly. When Carowinds team members came around to do their safety check, they were able to help me get comfortably situated so I could enjoy the ride.
The Carowinds team was more than helpful and accommodating in helping make sure I was able to ride while still being safely fastened into the seat and I never felt frustration or judgment from them which was nice.
Carowinds truly offers something for everyone, from the youngest guests soaking in their first theme park experiences to young adults craving adrenaline and entertainment. By focusing on the attractions and amenities that best suit each age group, you can ensure that every family member has an unforgettable day.
Whether it’s marveling at the characters in Planet Snoopy, screaming in unison on a roller coaster, or enjoying a live show, Carowinds is the backdrop for new adventures and cherished memories for families at every stage.
Navigating Carowinds Like a Pro
Overall, I felt like Carowinds was fairly easy to navigate. I will say that my biggest complaint is that I couldn’t get a paper map and had to use my phone to navigate throughout the day. Thankfully one of the other adults in our group handled navigating the park so I could use my phone for more important things – like taking pictures!
Parking and Transportation
- Planning a Visit to Carowinds Checklist: Before you hit the road, familiarize yourself with Carowinds’ parking options. The park offers ample parking for visitors, including preferred parking closer to the entrance for an additional fee. If you’re staying at a nearby hotel, check if they offer shuttle services to and from the park, which can save you the parking fee and the hassle of navigating traffic. Remember to take note of where you parked your car by writing down the lot section or taking a photo with your phone.
- Arrival Tips: To beat the rush and secure a good parking spot, aim to arrive at the park before it opens. This strategy not only helps with parking but also positions you ahead of the crowds for the first rides of the day. Keep an eye on the Carowinds website for any parking promotions or updates before your visit.
I’m an early riser and we frequently rope drop (or use the early entry hours) at Disney, so getting up and going isn’t anything new to my family. We arrived at the park shortly before it opened and had no problem finding a close parking spot in the general parking area.
There also was not a line for us to enter the park. We did get our tickets in advance (thanks again Carowinds!) and just scanned the bar codes on our phones to enter. Once we got into the park we didn’t need to access or tickets again.
Park Rules and FAQs Answered
- What Can I Not Bring to Carowinds? Familiarizing yourself with the park’s policies on prohibited items is crucial for a smooth entry. Carowinds does not allow outside food or drinks (with exceptions for baby food and guests with special dietary needs), weapons of any kind, drones, or selfie sticks. For a comprehensive list, check the official Carowinds website before packing your bag.
- How Do I Prepare for Carowinds? Preparation is key to enjoying your day at the park. Pack essentials like sunscreen, water bottles (empty to fill inside the park), comfortable walking shoes, and weather-appropriate clothing. Consider bringing a portable charger for your phone, especially if you plan to use the Carowinds app throughout the day. Don’t forget hats and sunglasses to protect against the sun.
- How Long Does It Take to Ride Everything at Carowinds? Covering every ride in a single day can be challenging, especially on busy days. To maximize your time, create a priority list of must-do rides and attractions based on the interests of your group. Utilize the Carowinds app to monitor wait times and plan your route accordingly. Consider investing in Fast Lane passes if you’re determined to experience every thrill without the long waits.
- What Is the Least Crowded Day at Carowinds? Typically, weekdays during the off-peak season (late spring or early fall) see fewer visitors, making them the best days to visit if you’re looking to avoid crowds. Additionally, rainy days can deter crowds, but be prepared with ponchos and waterproof gear if you choose to brave the weather.
Making the Most of Your Visit
- Early Arrival: Arriving early not only benefits parking but also puts you at the front of the lines for popular rides. Plan to be at the gates at least 30 minutes before the park opens, especially if you’re visiting during peak season or on weekends.
- Meal Planning: Eating at Carowinds can be part of the fun, with a wide variety of dining options available. To save money, consider the all-day dining plan if you plan to spend the whole day at the park. Alternatively, you can exit the park for lunch and return later—the hand stamp or your ticket allows re-entry. There are plenty of picnic areas outside the park where you can enjoy your packed meals.
- Fast Lane Passes: Assess your group’s priorities to decide if Fast Lane passes are worth the investment for your visit. If you’re visiting on a crowded day or have a tight schedule wanting to cover as many rides as possible, these passes can significantly enhance your experience by reducing your wait times.
Navigating Carowinds like a pro means planning ahead and understanding the rules. From where you park to how you tackle the rides, every choice can impact your day. Armed with these tips, you’re ready to conquer Carowinds with confidence, ensuring that your visit is filled with fun, excitement, and as little waiting as possible. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, these strategies will help you make the most of every moment at this beloved amusement park.
Making the Most of Your Carowinds Visit
It really doesn’t matter if you’re visiting for one day or multiple days – you still want to make the most of your visit. I’m sharing some of the tips and tricks we learned and some things we’ll do differently on our next visit.
Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Experience
- Early Arrival: Getting to the park before the gates open can significantly improve your experience. This strategy allows you to enjoy popular rides with shorter wait times and explore the park in the cooler morning hours. It’s a simple yet effective way to maximize your fun and minimize the hassle of navigating through crowds. We visited at the end of July and getting an early start was a game changer for us. It was much cooler in the morning and there were no lines for anything the kids wanted to ride. Starting out the day this way made for a much more enjoyable day for everyone.
- Meal Planning: Carowinds offers a wide variety of dining options that cater to every taste and dietary need. To save money and time, consider purchasing a dining plan if you intend to eat multiple meals in the park. Alternatively, you can pack a cooler with lunch and snacks and eat in the designated picnic area outside the park gates. This is a great way to enjoy family time and a meal together without the added cost of park food. We did purchase the dining package and it made meals and snacks throughout the day so much easier! The kids all knew what they were able to get what they could get and it helped save quite a bit of money throughout the day. The kids loved being able to grab a drink, snack, or meal when they were hungry and the parents loved not having to spend all the money (or the day saying no and then dealing with the meltdowns that would have followed).
- Fast Lane Passes: If your goal is to experience as many rides as possible, investing in Fast Lane passes can be a game-changer, especially during peak visiting times. These passes allow you to bypass standard lines, giving you more time to enjoy the park’s attractions. While they add to the cost of your visit, the time saved and the increase in rides enjoyed can make them well worth the investment for thrill-seekers and those with limited time in the park. We visited on a weekday in late July and did not need to purchase the Fast Lane passes. Now we didn’t have anyone in our group who had to ride the huge roller coasters, so things like that might make a difference for your visit.
For Couples and Groups:
- Date Days or Nights at Carowinds: For couples, Carowinds offers a mix of thrilling rides and romantic spots perfect for date day or night. Enjoy a ride on the Ferris wheel for a scenic view of the park, share a funnel cake, or test your bravery together on the park’s most exhilarating coasters. Look out for special events, like live music or fireworks, that can add a special touch to your date.
- How to Stay Connected and Meet-Up Points for Groups: When visiting Carowinds in a group, it’s easy to get separated in the crowd. Designate meet-up points and times throughout the day to regroup and share experiences. The Carowinds app can be a valuable tool for coordinating meetups and planning your day in real-time. Also, consider wearing matching or bright-colored shirts to easily spot each other in a crowd.
Making Memories:
- Capture the Moment: Whether it’s a selfie in front of the iconic Carowinds entrance or a group photo on your favorite ride, capturing these moments will keep the memories alive long after the day is over. Utilize the park’s photo services for professional shots, especially on rides for candid reactions.
- Souvenir Shopping: Take a piece of Carowinds home with you by visiting the souvenir shops scattered throughout the park. From exclusive merchandise and apparel to unique gifts, these souvenirs can serve as a lasting reminder of your fun-filled day. You can even purchase photos of you and your group taken. on some of the rides or by photographers around the park.
Health and Safety Tips:
- Stay Hydrated and Protected: Between the excitement and the North Carolina sun, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated and protected. Drink plenty of water throughout the day (free water stations are available throughout the park), and reapply sunscreen to ensure you’re shielded from the sun’s rays.
- First Aid and Rest Areas: Know the locations of first aid stations for any unexpected issues. Also, take advantage of rest areas to sit down, relax, and recharge before continuing your adventure. There are plenty of benches, rocking chairs, and shady areas around the park.
- Keep Belongings Safe: There are lockers available for rental at designated areas in the park. You’re able to access your locker throughout the day so it can be a great place to store things like a change of clothes, bathing suit and towel, or other items safely while you go have fun.
Your visit to Carowinds is an opportunity to create memories, have some new adventures, and enjoy quality time with loved ones. With these tips and tricks, you’ll be ready to navigate the park like an expert, making the most of every moment. Whether you’re screaming in unison on a roller coaster, enjoying a delicious meal, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Carowinds offers an array of experiences that cater to every visitor. So, lace up your comfortable shoes, apply that sunscreen, and step into Carowinds ready for a day of uncomplicated, unforgettable fun.

Rent a cabana for the day to enjoy your private shaded area, equipped with loungers, a ceiling fan, and other amenities to elevate your water park experience. It’s the perfect way to ensure your family has a comfortable home base to rest, recharge, and store your belongings.
- Soak Up the Sun: With ample lounging areas spread throughout the park, you can easily find a sunny spot or a shaded retreat to lay back and soak up the Carolina sun. - Stay Fueled: Exploring Carolina Harbor works up an appetite, but with a variety of dining options scattered throughout the water park, you’re never far from a delicious meal or a refreshing drink. From quick snacks to full meals, the offerings cater to a wide range of tastes and dietary needs, ensuring you have the energy to tackle the waves, slides, and everything in between.
Planning Your Visit
- Timely Tips: Carolina Harbor operates seasonally, typically opening from late spring through early fall. Check Carowinds’ official website for exact dates and hours to plan your visit accordingly. Remember, admission to Carolina Harbor is included with your Carowinds ticket, offering a two-for-one deal that’s hard to beat.
- Pack Accordingly: Don’t forget to bring your water park essentials, including swimsuits, towels, waterproof cases for phones and valuables, and flip-flops or water shoes. Lockers are available for rent to store your belongings securely while you enjoy the water.
- Make Use of the Lockers: We kept our belongings in a locker so we weren’t carrying wet clothes around with us the rest of the day. If you rent a locker in the water park area, make sure you remove your belongings before the water park closes. Once the water park closes, you no longer have access to those lockers.
- Keep Belongings Safe: While we put most of our items in the locker, I did want to keep my cell phone with me. I brought a small combination lock box that I was able to attach to the lounge chairs. I was able to keep my phone and money secure while we were on rides or in the wave pool without worrying.
- Bring Water Shoes: The pavement is hot – like really hot (like kids screaming hot)! Make sure to pack water shoes, Crocs, or flip flops to wear when you’re walking between the slides and pools and chairs and things. Everyone else will have shoes there too so make sure you don’t bring anything you love. Someone else may accidentally slip your shoes on or they may get lost or broken.
- Dress Appropriately: You’ll want to make sure that you wear a bathing suit that covers your body. Tiny bikinis are not allowed (we saw several people asked to cover up exposed breasts and bottoms-which we appreciated). Two piece bathing suits are ok, they provide coverage of your private body parts.
- Dry Clothes: Before re-entering the theme park, you do need to put clothes back on. Several people were stopped at different areas and asked to cover up skimpy bathing suits so make sure that you’ve got a change of clothes if you plan to spend more time in the amusement park after your water park adventures.
- Plan for Wet Clothes: If you’re planning on hitting the theme park again after the water park, bring something to put your wet clothes in. We just used grocery bags and kept them in a locker until the end of the night so we didn’t have to carry them around with us.
Carolina Harbor at Carowinds is more than just a water park. It’s a really fun way to cool off when you need a break from thrill rides. Whether you’re riding the waves or basking in the sun, Carolina Harbor ensures your visit is filled with splash-tacular fun and memories that last a lifetime.
Packing Essentials for Your Ultimate Carowinds Day
Whether you’re planning to tackle the towering coasters, splash around in Carolina Harbor, or simply soak up the atmosphere, having the right items with you can make all the difference.
Here are some tips to help you pack your park bag for Carowinds:
1. Tickets and Park Essentials
- Printed or Digital Tickets: Ensure you have your Carowinds tickets ready, either printed out or saved on your mobile device for easy access.
- Park Map and App: Download the Carowinds app for real-time information on ride wait times, park maps, and more. There are not paper maps at the park so you’ll need to have the app to get around.
2. Clothing and Footwear
- Comfortable Clothing: Opt for light, breathable clothing that’s suitable for the weather. Remember, you’ll be walking and standing a lot, so choose outfits that are comfortable and lightweight.
- Swimwear: If you’re planning to enjoy Carolina Harbor, remember to pack your swimwear. Consider wearing it under your clothes to save time changing at the park.
- Comfortable Footwear: Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes for walking around the park. If you’re visiting the water park, bring flip-flops or water shoes.
- Change of Clothes: A change of clothes is essential if you plan to transition between the water park and the rides or if you simply want to freshen up before heading home.
3. Protective Gear
- Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen before you arrive and bring it with you for reapplication throughout the day. Opt for water-resistant sunscreen if you’ll be at the water park.
- Sunglasses and Hats: Protect your eyes and face from the sun with sunglasses and a breathable hat or cap.
- Ponchos or Rain Gear: Depending on the weather forecast, pack a lightweight poncho or rain jacket to stay dry during unexpected showers.
4. Health and Safety
- First Aid Kit: A small, basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications is always wise to have on hand.
- Hand Sanitizer and Wipes: Keep hand sanitizer and wipes for quick clean-ups, especially before and after meals or rides.
5. Food and Hydration
- Water Bottles: Bring refillable water bottles to stay hydrated throughout the day. Carowinds has several water fountains and refill stations.
- Snacks: Pack light snacks like granola bars, fruit, or crackers to keep your energy up. Remember, outside food may not be allowed in the park, but you can enjoy these in the parking lot or designated picnic areas.
6. Miscellaneous
- Portable Phone Charger: A portable charger ensures your phone stays charged, allowing you to capture memories and use the park’s app without worrying about battery life.
- Backpack or Daypack: Choose a comfortable, lightweight backpack or daypack to carry your essentials. Opt for one with multiple compartments to keep items organized and easily accessible.
- Plastic Bags: Bring a few sealable plastic bags to protect your phone and other valuables from water rides or rain. You’ll also need something to put wet clothes and towels in.
Packing smart for your Carowinds visit not only prepares you for a day full of adventure but also ensures you can focus on the fun without stress. By checking these items off your list, you’re all set for an unforgettable day at Carowinds, ready to enjoy everything the park has to offer. Keeping Safe at Carowinds
Just like anything else, there’s always a risk when visiting a theme park. We never felt unsafe or uncomfortable during our visit. To help give you more peace of mind, here are a few tips:
- Lockers: Use the lockers that are located throughout the park. You can keep important items locked up while you’re riding or swimming without having to worry about losing them.
- Leave Expensive Items at Home: Leave things at home like expensive sunglasses and jewelry. That way you’ll be able to focus on having fun and not worrying about keeping track of those things throughout the day.
- Pay Attention Packing Your Bag: Pack your wallet or money in a secret pocket or pouch inside your bag – not an outside pocket. It might be easier to get to, but that’s the problem! It could fall out or be taken out of your bag if it’s in an outside pocket.
- Lock Box: If you’ve got things you need to keep with you, you could get something like a combination lock box to keep in your bag. This could add another layer of security for you, especially when you’re in the water park and not with your bag.
Fireworks Fun: Ending Your Day at Carowinds
At the end of the night, you can view a fun fireworks and drone show. We found it was best to view it from the front of the park near the entrance and exit area, but you can certainly see it from all over the park.
It’s not a super loud or long show, which is also nice. The surrounding shops are also open so if part of your group wants to watch the show, the others could go shopping during that time.
Many of the rides are also still operating at this time so you could take advantage of shorter lines since many others will be watching the show overhead.
Don’t forget to empty your locker before leaving for the night! If you made use of a locker during the day, you want to make sure that you got everything out before you leave.
