Summer is such a fun season where families are able to sit back and relax to enjoy the quality time together in the sunshine. When it comes to summer break, many families will venture off to go on vacation or spend the day at the beach. If you’re going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time, you’ll want to know how to keep your family safe from those potent sun rays. I’m going to share a few sun safety tips for families to keep safe while you’re out there under the sun on a hot summer day.
Use Sunscreen
It’s best to use a sunscreen that’s a minimum of SPF 30 on your kids, or SPF 15 for adults. If you’re going to be out at the beach and enjoying swimming, the sunscreen should be water-resistant as well. Check the label of all sunscreen your family will use to be sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. We have a few different kinds in our beach and pool bags – water resistant, sticks to easily apply to faces, and all over sunscreen.
Provide Shade
Use a large beach umbrella or canopy for shade during the height of the day when the sun is strongest. The sun is usually at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Sun damage happens often to families who are simply in the backyard enjoying the day to day activities. Having a shady spot to take a break for everyone can be helpful. Try something like this to put in your back yard to provide a shady space.
Use Sunglasses
We often forget to protect our eyes but they are very important and the sun can cause damage to them. Be sure to purchase sunglasses for your entire family to wear while out in the sun. Sunglasses come in all shapes, styles, and protections for every family member to protect their eyes from the sun. This is one of the easiest sun safety tips for families!
Check Medicine
Many medicines make the skin more fragile under the sun. If you or other family members are on any medication be sure to read the labels. You can also ask your doctor if the medication will make your family member more susceptible to skin damage from the sun rays.
Wear Protective Clothing
Look into buying summer clothing that helps protect against sun rays. There are many clothing lines made for the summer season that help deter the sun rays from getting through clothing onto the skin. Being able to wear clothing that protects your skin from the sun is an easy way to keep your whole family safe from the sun.
