The holidays can be a very overwhelming time. With parties, school programs, work obligations, and going to see Santa there’s a lot happening. Try these tips to help you be more organized this Christmas season.
It’s never too soon to start planning for the holiday season. Whatever you know about now, plan for it now. Things always pop up and it’s easy to get overbooked and overwhelmed if you don’t know what you’ve already committed to. Find a place to keep track of commitments and make lists for the things you need to get done so you don’t miss anything in the midst of the craziness.
Find a system that works for you and stick with it. It could be a calendar, a note app on your smart phone, or just a good old notebook. Use whatever is easiest for you. Before you get settled on a system, consider how many people will need access (if you’re tackling things with several others, having something shareable will be helpful) and how you’ll likely access the information (keep a list on your phone or taking a picture of your hand written list can be handy to reference while you’re out shopping if you forgot your hand written list at home and find a great deal or perfect gift).
You don’t need to do everything! I’ll openly admit this is not something I’m good at. When it comes to my kids, I am a bit better because I’m the one who has to deal with the over tired little people having meltdowns when they’ve done too much. Mark down everything that looks interesting on your calendar, noting which things are “have to” and which are “want to”. As the calendar fills up, you’ll be able to see what things you can keep and where you’ll need to make a choice between events.
Stick to Your Plan (and Your Budget)
Going through the hassle of putting a plan together then not following it is a huge waste of your already limited time. As things get down to the wire and you’re feeling more pressure, it’s easy to stray from your well laid plans. Do everything possible to avoid this happening.
Say Yes to Help
When a friend offers to help you wrap gifts or bake, take them up on the offer! Not only will you be getting things accomplished, you’ll be spending time with them. Hosting a cookie swap is a great way to help you make a dent in your holiday baking while getting some girlfriend time in the process.
Be sure you make time to enjoy the holiday season despite the craziness. What tips and tricks do you use to stay organized during the holidays?
