If your days are anything like mine, when the kids are awake, the tv’s on one of the Disney channels, Cartoon Network, or a kid movie. By the time they’re in bed, I’m too tired to sit down and watch tv. Instead, I set my DVR to record shows I’m interested in to catch up while they’re at a play date, with their dad, or on a night I can actually stay awake late enough.
Girlfriends Guide to Divorce
It’s a show that you’ve got to sit down and pay attention to if you’re going to watch. Keeping track of who’s who is helpful but some of the topics covered aren’t exactly kid friendly. Basically Abby McCarthy is an author who goes from maintaining her “image” as a happily married woman to ending up divorcing from her husband. The show is about her and her friends and how they’re all dealing with their divorces and other issues in their lives. Each episode revolves around a different rule for dealing with divorce. Some of the situations are relatable while others I kind of roll my eyes at, but there’s enough of a plot line and connection to the characters that’s kept me watching.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
This one is one a friend recommended to me and I fell in love. Kimmy was trapped in an underground bunker for years and is now trying to figure out life and the world. Kids could benefit from the different lessons Kimmy learns along the way but there are references or situations that aren’t always the best for little eyes. I enjoy watching the characters change throughout the series and seeing how things work out for them. Overall, it’s a pretty lighthearted show that you’ll enjoy.
Fuller House
I remember watching Full House back in the day when I was a kid. One thing I love is that the writers and cast aren’t afraid to be a little bolder when handling different subjects. There’s nothing inappropriate (and my kids love watching), but sometimes it’s fun to get a little blast from the past by yourself without having to explain some of the references to the original show.
Flipping Out
Overall this one too is ok for the kids but they probably wouldn’t be that into it. For me, I love seeing how the other half lives and watching them shop for decor and the projects all come together. Jenni Pulous is a favorite of mine too so I love watching her with the others, as well as being able to see pieces of their personal lives. Knowing they struggle and they’re real people too makes them more relatable.
The Royals
This one is certainly not kid friendly at all. Yes the lessons would be helpful but there are way too many adult scenes and situations for them to watch with you. Desperate Housewives was one of my favorite shows and this reminds me of it very much. As you watch, you’ll develop such a connection with the characters that you’ll be laughing and crying right along with them.
And a bonus….
UnREAL
UnREAL gives you a glimpse into the making of a reality show from the point of production. While it’s fiction, several people who work on/for the show have previous experience in reality television so I do believe there’s some truth to what’s in the show. Again, this one’s not for the little eyes due to some of the content and scenes. You’ll find yourself rooting for the different characters for a variety of reasons and changing your mind throughout the episodes.
So what’s your favorite show to watch when the kids aren’t around? Leave me a comment to let me know.
