Every mom I know dreams of a few minutes that are kid-free to get something done or just take a breather. (Remember – no judgement here! We know you love your little darlings and will miss them when they’re gone. It’s ok to take some time for yourself.) When you finally find yourself having some kid-free time, you might be wondering what to do with it. Here are four things you can do when your kids are gone.
Deep cleaning the house when your kids are home can be like shoveling in the middle of a blizzard. Going through the toys in the playroom and getting rid of things that aren’t played with is like trying to smuggle drugs. Cleaning out dressers to get rid of outgrown clothing means the kids are going to unfold every piece of it to look before you decide if it should stay or go. Sometimes it’s easier to get things like this done without the kids around. It won’t take you nearly as long to get things completed either.
Any parent looks for an excuse to go to the store without kids. Getting them into (and out of) the car seat is a wrestling match. Making a stop to get a cookie or go through the toy aisle doesn’t seem like a big deal but it can add lots of minutes to your quick trip into the store. And heaven help you if they don’t have the right cart to ride in. Being able to just grab a basket and what you need is everything sometimes.
Part Time Job
If you’re in a situation where you don’t have your children on a regular basis (co-parenting with visitation for example) and need some additional funds, getting a part time job might be a good fit. Be sure when you’re applying that you’re upfront about your availability to be sure they’re able to work around your schedule with your kids.
Sometimes you need to use that time to take care of you. Mom is always taking care of everyone else. Use this time to recharge. Read a magazine or book in a bubble bath without someone coming in to ask questions or touch the bubbles or try to get in with you. Spend some time meditating or working out or doing yoga if that’s thing. Curl up on the couch and watch Netflix with a glass of wine. Do what you need to do to recharge your batteries.
