While it’s not always easy prepping for Thanksgiving with kids, it’s a great way to spend time together as a family. I try to make it fun and thought I’d share one of our favorite appetizers and some of our favorite desserts.
Turkey Vegetable Platter
Why have a simple vegetable platter when you can have a turkey themed vegetable platter? My kids love to help assemble this platter for Thanksgiving. Other variations of this idea is to create a turkey themed cheese platter or fruit platter. There are many pictures of these ideas available online, but here is a picture of the platter we put together last Thanksgiving.
In addition to the traditional Thanksgiving desserts of apple and pumpkin pie, my kids like to help make a few desserts of their own.
Turkey Hand Cookies
Turkey hand cookies are one dessert that my family makes every year. Each of my kids makes a stencil of their hand using card stock, which is then used as a cookie cutter to make turkey cookies. Once cooked, my kids can’t wait for their favorite part – decorating! We like to use candy corn and chocolate chips, but M&Ms or small cinnamon candy would make for great decorations as well. Nick Jr. has an easy, kid friendly recipe to make this family favorite dessert.
Turkey cupcakes are another fun dessert that my kids like to help with. While our cupcakes are not quite as fancy as these created by Betty Crocker, we create ours using a little bit less frosting, candy corns and M&Ms.
We go apple picking more than once each fall, which means we have a lot of apples. Besides using them as snacks and in pies, apple crisp and applesauce, we like to make apple cookies. I am still trying out recipes, but this recipe from Betty Crocker is pretty close to perfect. I have tried the recipe more than once, first using Granny Smith apples, and then Honeycrisp apples. We all preferred the Granny Smith apples in these cookies and tend to add a small amount of cinnamon instead of nutmeg.
I can’t wait to spend Thanksgiving with our extended family and hope all of the readers of Always Moving Mommy have a great celebration with their family and friends!
